Seungyoung Kim - Traces

Gallery SPACE 2008.12

To exist is to communicate with the things before our eyes. At the moment we see something, our awareness, preconception, and knowledge turns into the memory of a concrete experience. ‘To forget the name,’ as the French symbolist-poet Paul Valery remarked, refers to an act of moving ideas from the sphere of reason to the domain of internalized-sensibility, including wounds and reminiscence, through a process of communication, like ‘seeing’. Extinction, generation, and emotional intervention, derived from ‘seeing’, are critical clues to engage Kim Seung-young’s work.

Shine Kong - Good Morning

2007.06

One could describe Shine Kong’s recent works as a ‘situation play of objects’. Such theatrical tendency present in the series Ribbing Room and Good Morning that were in her 2007 solo show at Arario Gallery, Seoul, play an important role in laying the foundation for her recent works. The objects the artist conceives herself become the symbol of the meaning she bestows upon them, and the relationship among the objects creates the narrative in the work. The objects such as the cloud, ladder, tree, paper airplane, and camel with a lifeboat around its neck, are all made with clay at first, then they are arranged on a stage and are given a role according to the direction of the stage conductor, the artist herself. Her work is not complete until the staged scene is manifested into a flat still life painting.

Doojin Ahn - Point

Koto art center 2008.09

At first glance, fragments of plastic and wooden scraps appear to have been arranged at random. However, after closer observation, some sort of order is detectable. Rhythm and repetition exist in a way quite similar to those generated by a city under construction. Individual items do not resemble actual buildings or plants, but when grouped together, they appear to form a city.

Jinah Sohn - I´m not there

GALLERY ARTSIDE 2009.06

Sohn Jinah’s artworks, which are made in depth with intensity span of large-scale workload from sculpture to paintings, at first glance it seems like it is lacking of contents compared to its outward gorgeousness and beauty. It is because dense surface seems like it is resisting to penetrate from the depth, and empty chairs and space shown frequently in her works represent absence and silence. However, it is quite paradoxical to learn that her works attempt a lot of storytelling through the dense surface, absence and silence. Form of art is for its contents and not for its own sake. Combination of symbolic components which artist has created is a tool and device for description and it addresses the realities of human beings by process of artists’ concentrated work. In case of paintings, they use a variety size of canvas because painters attempt to depict different stories by their size aside from visual or formal attraction.

Doojin Ahn - Saint Brain Temple

Brain Factory 2006.08

In the art school, one can find the students who carry around small drawing books as if those are the valuable treasures and doodle on them all the time . Since their treasure books are usually unfolded during classes, it was not difficult to look into those books and what they have done. As the minutely filled pages are turned, those compositional capabilities exposed in those little notes with correspondingly accompanied doodling all over the pages, not to mention the perfect drawing techniques with details... were drawn exclamation out of us.

Seungwoo Back - Revised Ideals

Gana Art Gallery 2009.10

Seung Woo Back, an emerging photographer from Korea, describes his artistic vision as follows: “I am not a serious artist who records history or an artist who seeks sublime beauty. If I had to define myself, I am an apprehensive, cynical daydreamer who looks at the world then distorts it and with a bit of imagination. I dream of creating my own world.”These words are concise yet they accurately define the core of his work. This essay intends to focus on his new series Blow Up (2005- ) and reveal the methods Back uses in depicting his consistent ideas and to create his distinctive photographs.

Seungwoo Back - Ilwoo Photography Award Exhibition

ILWOO SPACE 2010.06

Spring 2010 in Korea had its share of ups and downs. Notably, a navy vessel named Cheonan sank in the West Sea. The victims were considered killed in action, and a funeral was held amidst national mourning. Korea is the last divided country in the world. This is a clear fact. However, a fact that does not change for a long time usually attracts little attention. It has been 60 years since the Korean War, and 57 years since the cease-fire. The reality of the nation’s division has lasted too long to have much effect on Korean individuals. Meanwhile, war is never far away from their reality. All men of Korean nationality must enlist and serve in the military. Koreans often say that one becomes a ‘real man’ only after serving in the army. All Korean women, at one time or another in their lives, shed tears for a boyfriend or a brother or a son going off to the army. In Korea, the unfinished war that has been put on hold goes on in the form of exceptional incidents and everyday happenings.

Sunghun Kong - Suburbs, Leisure

Artforum Newgate 2007.02

What do we expect of a painting in general? We expect a painting to give the viewers comfort and pleasure by maintaining proper balance and harmony of colors, lines and composition of picture plane no matter what is painted or how it is done. What is a difficult painting? Whether the painting is abstract or representational, it is the case that we do not see the point of the painting although we recognize the elements in the painting, or that we can't understand what it is in the painting.
