나는 두 번째 시리즈 「그림엽서(Picture Postcard」에서 일본 시오야, 대만, 한국의 부천에 있는 테마파크의 미니어쳐를 보여줌으로써 미니어쳐 존재의 보편적 조건에 대한 사색을 통해 테마파크의 소비자들이 가지는 공통점을 시사하며, 현재 아시아인들이 처한 문화의 편재성, 콤플렉스에 대한 날카로운 비판을 통한 심미적 경험을 제공한 동시에 사진의 “본다” 라는 속성이 얼마나 허약한 것인지 보여주었다.세 번째 시리즈 「오래된 사진첩(Old Photo Album)」은 전작「그림엽서(Picture Postcard」의 개념적,형식적 표현의 확장이다. 나는 영화, 드라마 촬영용 세트 장을 전통적 대형 카메라로 흐린 이미지로 촬영함으로써 마치 다락방에서 꺼낸 사진첩에 조부모, 부모의 낯선 젊은 모습에서 오는 이질감과 묘한 슬픔을 만들어낸다. 작가는 전작에 이어 사진의 또 다른 속성인 ‘기록記錄’을 통한 ‘기억記憶’, ‘추억追憶’ 또는 지난 시대의 ‘향수鄕愁’라는 심리적 경험이 얼마나 허약한 기반에 기인한 것인지를 보여준다. 영화, 드라마 세트 장은 사람들에게 타임머신과 같이 자신의 과거로 돌아가는 기회를 제공하지만 그 심리적 경험은 ‘덧없는ephemeral' 것이며 우리가 견고하게 믿고 있는 사진 또한 그러하다고 말한다. 나는 이러한 시리즈를 통해 자신의 창작 행위에 대해서도 진지한 성찰을 보여주려 했다.

○ Artist's note

In my second solo exhibition, Picture Postcards, I presented miniatures of drama and film settings in Bucheon, Korea, Shioya, Japan, and Shenzhen, China suggesting that all they have something in common for their consumers. In many ways, the exhibition was a criticism of Asian people’s complex and its culturally weak presence, providing viewers with an aesthetic experience that shows how a photographic attribute of ‘seeing’ is feeble.
 
My third solo show The Old Photo Album is a conceptual, formal extension of the Picture Postcards exhibition. As in the old photographs of my grandparents and parents taken when they were young, I intend to evoke a sense of heterogeneity and subtle sorrow by blurring the scenes of drama and film settings, using a traditional large-format camera.
 
Through this exhibition, I try to show our psychological experiences such as reminiscences, memories, and nostalgia that are often evoked by a photographic attribute of ‘recording’ are founded on an infirm basis. I believe such psychical experiences appear ephemeral as photographs often do. Through this show, I have a chance to reflect seriously on my creative activity.
