Children's artwork on show Jan 21 2013
Pablo Picasso once said, “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.”

Zien Art Space in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province seems to know the solution by encouraging talented children to grow as artists. The studio is nurturing their talent through various programs and exhibitions. From sculpture to painting, various pieces created by 28 children will be presented at the gallery from Jan. 23 to March 31.

“Speak to Your Thoughts,” is an annual event which specializes in supporting children’s art activities and presents their works in the exhibition.

It is the outcome of children who have participated in the studio’s art program over the past year. They have expressed their creativity through the works such as those featuring leaves in clay and self-portraits on canvas.

“Looking at their work, there seems to be no difference from pieces by adults. Rather, children have more boundless imagination and creativity, which enables them to freely express their thoughts,” the art studio said in a statement.

“Completing the works is important but also coming up with fresh ideas is stressed more in the program.”

The gallery said that their works were made not by artistic techniques but from their curiosity, revealing pure qualities of the raw materials.

“Children’s understanding of objects and phenomena is not yet complete. So they never stop thinking and reinterpreting their experiences which are full of mystery rather than familiarity. Their thoughts and imagination are bigger than those of adults. Children, like a blank piece of paper, have infinite potential and no barriers to opportunity. Their inexhaustible ideas fill the blanks,” the studio said.

According to the gallery, teachers help children express their thoughts on different topics rather than just portray the objects as what they are.

Opened in 2008, Zien Art Space has since been holding educational programs for children in diverse genres of art from painting, architecture and sculpture to performance art.

Apart from the children’s programs, the studio also offers art experience programs for adults and holds various exhibitions of high-profile artists from both Korea and abroad and supports emerging artists in the open studio.
