GWON OSANG- DOOSAN Gallery Seoul May 23 2011
DOOSAN Gallery Seoul presents the exhibition of Osang Gwon’s works of art entitled ‘Sculpture’ from May 6 to June 2. This exhibition consists of about 10 works selected from his recent series, The Flat.
As exemplified by his The Flat and The Sculpture Series as well as his Deodorant Type Series, for which he cut out tens of thousands of photographs and attached them, Osang Gwon has been demonstrated his original method for and perspective toward contemporary sculpture. While focusing on the modern society’s pursuits of the ideas such as ‘lightness’ and ‘convenience,’ he attempts to propose for a new dimension of contemporary sculpture different from conventional one.
For The Flat Series featured here, he cuts many different images out of various magazines and then sets them on edge by use of thin wire. This process effectively transforms two-dimensional objects into three-dimensional sculptures. Then, he photographs these paper sculptures which are put together.
It can be said that The Flat is a ‘contemporary’ sculptural series in the respect that it ‘sculpturizes’ and ‘three-dimensionizes’ the photographs of the objects through which what contemporary society gives emphasis to can be vividly revealed by use of a utterly simple and very convenient method. This exhibition examines Osang Gwon’s creative and distinct approach to sculpture and intends to explain that his two-dimensional(photographs) works are not mere photographs but another form that the artistic medium of sculpture can assume.

Osang Gwon(born in 1974) received his B.F.A. and M.F.A. in sculpture from Hongik University in Seoul. He participated in the DOOSAN Residency New York and had an individual show in DOOSAN Gallery New York in 2010.
