이 그림은 한 장의 사진 이미지로부터 시작되었다. 막연한 향수를 불러일으키는 증기기관차 이미지는 그 속에 근대적 기계문명과 제국주의 침략의 도구라는 함의를 숨기고 있다. 사진은 근대화의 주체가 일본에서 미국으로 넘어갔던 해방기의 정치적 상황을 단적으로 드러내고 있다. 역사적 사실을 기록한 사진을 그린다는 것은 재현을 둘러싼 여러 복잡한 측면들에 대한 숙고와 결단을 요구한다. 사진이 지시하고 있는 사실을 훼손하지 않으면서 그림은 또 어떻게 독립적일 수 있을 것인가? 하필 그 이미지를 다시 보여주려 하는 이유에 대해서 그리는 것이 가능한가? 이러한 물음들 속에서 그림은 사적인 영역과 그 바깥의 영역 사이에서 끊임없이 흔들린다. 그림 속에 다시 그려진 증기기관차는 눈밭 속을 표류하고 있다. 나는 차가운 눈밭을 달리는 증기기관차의 이미지에서 그 어떤 것보다 심한 고독감을 느낀다. 그것은 정해진 궤적을 달리지만 결국 종착지에 다다를 수 없을 것 같은 막막함 같은 것이다.

This work began with an image of a photograph. The image of this steam locomotive, arousing vague nostalgia, is hiding an undertone of machine civilization and tools of invasion during imperialism. It shows directly the political situation during the changeover of modernization from Japan to the US. To paint a picture containing historical records demands a lot of complex consideration and prompt decision regarding re-creating the image. How can it be independent and still not damage the facts inside of the photograph? Can it be possible to show the reason why I am trying to re-create this image? The picture is faltering between those realms of questions. The steam locomotive is floating through a snowfield. I feel strong loneliness from the image of a driving locomotive in the cold snowfield. It is driving along a settled trace but feels like it can never reach its destination.
