Gallery Skape gladly presents 'Poetic reality in Space', the solo show of the Dutch artist, Reinoud Oudshoorn, introduced for the first time in Asia. The lyricism and the restrained calmness expressed in his artwork create a subtle stir in our emotional mind, often being seduced by changes and novelty with a fanatical obsession. The peaceful energy magically released from his works makes us stop walking with hurried steps. Oudshoorn's work is just like an inmost journal about space. The forms that he imagines in his head, firstly inspired from the work studio's wall or a piece of paper are translated into a drawing. Then soon after, the architectural-plan-like drawing turns into a three dimensional sculpture. The smooth curve of the shape, destined to be a sculpture, is drawn without a hitch. The drawing where the shape's proportion is perfectly calculated in pencil carries a beauty that is even comparable with the completed artwork in form of sculpture. The artist fascinated by the rules of perspective, questions what kind of relationship can be created between the illusionarydepth in two dimensional surface and the one in three dimensional sculpture, during the process of turning a drawing into a sculpture. The invisible vanishing point created by all the lines of the work suggests an infinite space within the flat wall. The artist firstly transcribes the image he comes up with onto a surface. Then he cuts the material and trims it with a serious manner just like a mathematician solving a great formula. 2 however, the artist says mathematics is used as a necessary tool for his artwork and he doesn't have a particular passion for it. All the manufacturing processes proceed silently at his work studio. In Oudshoorn's works composed of wood, glass or iron, the materials' strong characters paradoxically reveal poetic beauty. The beauty of a gentle curve looking like a pregnant woman's belly, shown in most of his works and the harmony generated from the pertinent mix of curved and straight lines bring out lyricism in the artwork. The straight and cold character of iron is combined with 'Romanticism' expressed by the opaqueness of semi-transparent glass. On the other hand, the warm character of wood is expressed by flexible and smooth curves revealing the refined design aspect from North European culture. His sculptures, impossible to be regenerated, make a big difference to the most of contemporary sculptures being reproducible. Oudshoorn's art is a reflection on space, emptiness and the other side of the visible. It is a pause translated in words of silence and slowness, which keeps stimulating our sensitivity.
