Introduction Cottonseed(Somsi) is a nonprofit gallery-cum-café opened in the Artists Village in Mullae-dong, Yeongdeunpo-gu. Somssi means craftsmanship or cottonseed in Korea. Cottonseed is a self-sustaining nonprofit gallery, unlike existing alternative spaces that depend heavily on public funds. To run the space, it operates a small café and hosts various sponsored events. Profits generated from the café and events will be used to support artists and to hold exhibition, as well as to provide opportunities for local residents to appreciate artworks and participate in artistic activities. Unlike other commercial gallery districts, the Artists Village in Mullae-dong has grown into a unique area where artists themselves take the initiative to work autonomously and pursue projects – both small and large – with local merchants. Somssi has decided to become a new resident in the Artists Village in Mullae-dong to serve as a nonprofit, multi-purpose art space just like other artistic organizations that deal with diverse media with different roles and activities as well as visual art participants gathered in Mullae-dong. Somssi will take part in various projects that take place in the Artists Village, serve as a communication channel with other districts and a land post for introducing artistic activities in the Village to outside. The history of artists flocking into a less developed area within the city but leaving there for another part of the town once development starts in the area has been repeated in the past. As Mullae-dong is already planned for re-development, it is hard to tell how much time the Artists Village and Somssi will have for these artists. However, as urban development cannot wipe out the history of artistic creations for which dreams and ideas are shared and co-created, Somssi’s activities are deemed as sufficiently meaningful. Mullae Arts Archive At the second floor of Somssi, there is Mullae Arts Archive that was established in 2011. Mullae Arts Archive collects, preserves and introduces current art practices by visual artists working in the Mullae Artists Village.
