Jungho Oak - Gangjeong Village Project 

Gangjeong Village, Seogwipo City, Jeju island, Korea 2009

"Gangjeong Village Project" was conducted following "The Rainbow Headquarters" installed at the SeoulDesign Olympics." Gangjeong Village in Seogwipo City, Jeju Province is now in a season to harvest tangerines, but opposition to construction of a naval base is making some noise. The village offshore belongs to the "Biosphere Reserve" designated by the UNESCO.

The most distinctive quality that has prevailed in OUM JEONG-SOON's works throughout the past solo exhibitis of 1989 and 1990, and the present show is "Kiun"-the rhythm of life. Compared to earlier works from 1987 to 1989 that conveyed rhythm through the sticky adhesion of brush strokes, the more recent works relate through faster and lighter touches.

Choosing one after looking at the works of many other people in a short time depends on an instant judgment. In case of An Gyung-Soo, it was his little drawings. According to the artist, the drawings were made by combing and casting objects bought at the flea market in Germany in frottage method. The drawings stood out because of its consistency in method and attitude even though objects had a dim sense of presence.

In the various showcases of Flohmarkt, many objects that have almost lost their functions are being displayed. From things used and thrown away by someone, a postcard sent to someone from someone dozens of years ago, a photograph of landscape, a toy containing someone’s childhood memory, to books, LPs, kitchen wares and picture frames. Those were like stories which certain memories between people naturally kept going.

Her face emerges in her work. Since 1997, in Paris, Song Eun-Young has used her own face as a motif. It was then she had a keen interest in the “gaze.” The "gaze" in her work appears as an erased or torn image with her own face in black and white that is meticulously described and dryly expressed.
