An important objective of the SongEun ArtSpace is to support and promote young contemporary Korean artists and as part of our annual program, one promising mid-career artist is invited for a solo exhibition. This year, we are pleased to present our third featured artist, Sekyung Lee whose unique works are all conceived with human hair.

Hair is considered as a statement of an individual’s external beauty. And yet when the hair is detached from the body, it has a completely different meaning suggesting something grotesque and repulsive. Lee’s personal exploration of its properties and our contradictory understanding of it progressed through making highly decorative crafts such as traditional Asian and Western patterns with hair. Her contemplation of hair and exquisite representation with it let viewers rethink the stereotype definition when they realize all the beautiful patterns and works are composed of real hair.

In this exhibition, Lee presents major works such as her porcelain collection, on-site hair carpet installation and Transfer series focusing on the chaotic state of coexisting patterns and cultures of the East and West. Her new work, Recollection, is a collective work with 35 participants and shows that Lee’s interpretation of hair is a metaphor for memory. Though the images may seem very straightforward, Lee has achieved an exquisite and unique articulation of her experimental approach to hair as material and her own newly extended interpretation of it.
