강익중은 3인치의 작은 캔버스, 나무틀 등에 일상의 단편과 마음 속의 생각을 각양각색의 그림과 글로 표현하며 조화로운 세계상을 지향하는 작업을 한다. 한글, 한자, 영어, 사람들, 동물, 달항아리, 플라스틱 장남감 등 소재와 시제와 색이 제각각인 요소들은 그의 작품에서 어우러져 시각적인 균형을 이루며 조합, 연결, 통합을 이야기한다. 작가는 플라스틱 장난감을 통해 과거와 현재, 미래를 이야기하고, 달항아리나 한글이라는 소재에서는 한국적인 의미보다는 연결이라는 주제를 내세운다. 한글이 모음과 자음이 붙어서 한소리를 내며 달항아리는 따로 만들어진 아래, 윗부분이 불가마를 통과하며 한 몸이 되듯 따로 만들어지지만 하나가 된다는 것이다. 이처럼 작가는 미래와 과거, 동과 서, 남과 북을 연결하고자 하는 의지를 내비치며 작품을 통해 경계선을 연결선으로 바꾸는 역할을 하고 있다.
